Jan is a legend in the Urban Design and Planning field. Gehl's publications on enhancing the quality of urban life via design have included "Life Between Buildings", "Cities for People", "New City Spaces", "Public Spaces - Public Life", "New City Life", "How to Study Public Life", and others.  Gehl's "people-first" approach to urban design is credited with making Copenhagen one of the world's most livable cities in the world.

Gehl's work has had an impact on public space enhancements in over 50 cities across the world, including New York, London, Moscow, Copenhagen, Melbourne, and Sydney.
